Located in the scientific campus of La Doua in Villeurbanne (France), the "Functional Biology, Insects and Interactions" (BF2I) unit is one of 23 INSA-Lyon research laboratories.
The unit is associated with the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA). It belongs to the Plant Health and Environment Department, whose main mission is to acquire the fundamental knowledge required to understand and manage the relationships between crop plants and their biotic environment.
The research and training activities of the unit are closely linked together, and are carried out by a team of about 30 people.
The unit achieve basic training for engineers in the Biosciences department of INSA-Lyon, and doctoral course within the doctoral research and training school "Evolution, Ecosystems, Microbiology, Modelling" (E2M2) (the unit is host laboratory for doctoral research).
The research undertaken in the unit relates to the physiology of the insects and is focused on the analysis of the complex interactions with their symbionts, parasites and host plants. This knowledge contributes to an integrated approach towards plant protection against insect pests, through the development of sustainable agriculture which respects both the environment and human health.
